WHAT WE’LL DO

Collage is a form that depends upon rupture and reimagining—cutting and layering text in order to question the limits of how our realities are represented. Riso also operates using layers, reproducing content in ways that ask us to bend our sense of what a “copy” should do. In this 5-hour workshop, we will bring these two modes together, experimenting with collage technique to create erasure and found poems for the riso that will frustrate, surprise, corrupt, and delight. The workshop involves both collaborative and independent work that will emphasize slow wonder and experimentation. Participants will leave with an original print; a chapbook collecting the work we completed; and new insights into poetry, collage, and riso-printing. All experience levels welcome.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Mita Mahato is a comix artist and poet whose work joins fragments of used and discarded materials in poetic experiments that dramatize ecosystemic survival against capitalism. Her books are Arctic Play (The 3rd Thing 2024) and In Between (Pleiades 2017) and her poetry comics can be found in PRISMEcotoneIterantShenandoahANMLY, and other publications.
